Divine Wisdom

Be One with The Universe

See god in every pair of eyes, in the mountains, water, trees and animals. See god in ourself.

In order to be one, we must know that there are five types of restlessness.

The first is due to the place we are in. When we move away from certain places, streets or houses, we immediately feel better. Chanting, singing, or the innocence of children playing and laughing can change this atmospheric restlessness. If we chant and sing, the vibration in the place changes.

The second is restlessness in the body. Eating the wrong food, eating at odd times, not exercising and overworking can cause physical restlessness. The remedy for this is exercise, moderation in work habits and following a simple diet.

The third is mental restlessness. It is caused by ambition, strong thoughts, likes or dislikes. Knowledge alone can cure this restlessness; this includes seeing life from a broader perspective, knowing about the Self and realizing the impermanence of everything. If we achieve everything, so what? We shall die anyway. Knowledge of our death or life, confidence in the Self and in the divine can all calm down mental restlessness.

There is also emotional restlessness. Any amount of knowledge does not help here. Sudarshan Kriya helps. With it all emotional restlessness vanishes. Also, the presence of a guru, a wise person or a saint, can help calm emotional restlessness.

The fifth type of restlessness is rare; It is the restlessness of the soul.

When everything feels empty and meaningless. Do not try to get rid of this feeling. Embrace it! This restlessness of the soul can bring genuine prayer in we. It brings perfection and miracles in life. It is also needed to get that innermost longing for the divine. Celebrations (satsang) and the presence of enlightened people soothe the restlessness of the soul. Do not look for the divine somewhere in the sky. See god in every pair of eyes, in the mountains, water, trees and animals. See God in ourselves.

Heightened awareness brings we close to the reality. For this we must increase our prana. When we have reverence for the whole universe, we will be in harmony with it.

(Thanks Meena!)

Sri Sri’s message for the new year:

Become free like a bird. Open your wings and learn to fly. This is something you have to experience within yourself. If you think you are in bondage, you will remain bound here. Be free.

Ego

le bali magnifique

Ego appears when:

1. We don’t get attention.
2. We seem to be losing attention.
3. We get attention.

Ego causes heaviness, discomfort. It doesn’t let love flow.

Ego can be transcended by knowing the Truth; by enquiring “Who am I?”

Often, your attitude towards one who has ego is of contempt or jealousy, but rather you should have compassion, or even pity.

There is also a positive aspect of ego. It drives one to do some work. A person will do a job either out of compassion or out of ego. Most of the work in the society is by boosting the ego. But with joy, work is done out of love.

Ego is separateness; non-belongingness. It is wanting to prove and to possess and when you wake up and see, that there is nothing to be proved and nothing to be possessed; ego begin to dissolve and love will flow.

Honoring The Divine Consciousness

When Ashtavakra imparted the knowledge to King Janaka, wonder arose in him. Aho! He wondered, ‘How did I not recognize this truth for so long!’

Once he realized this truth, he said, ‘Salutations to myself!’ The transforming experience that ‘I am the paramatma, the Divine consciousness’ came to him.

The knowledge dawned that there is no difference between myself and the Divine consciousness which is omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient.
Leaving behind the limited mind and being established in the infinite consciousness is the Ashtavakra Gita.

We search for the Divine everywhere except within us. The process of puja or worship is to lead us from the external world to within. The highest expression of puja is meditation. In puja, we use and honor the five elements which form the basis of this creation and we honor ourselves as well.

When we do achamanam or offering of oblations, we offer water to kesava, the Divine within us. Each process in the puja leads us within.
When you go to sleep at night, think that the Divine is within me, ‘Salutations to the Divine in my heart!’ Meditate upon this, and then go to sleep. Then see how the quality of your sleep is!

There is no difference between the Guru, the Self and the Divine. Antarmukhi sada sukhi – He who perceives the Divinity within, whose mind is turned inward, is always happy.

The Divine consciousness is not limited like the body but is present everywhere like the space.

Honoring this divine consciousness is the Ashtavakra Gita.

Correcting Mistakes

Mistakes happen all the time. You often get irritated by mistakes and you want to correct them, but how many can you correct? ‘You correct others’ mistakes for two reasons. First is when someone’s mistake bothers you, and second is when you correct someone for their sake so that they can grow, not because it bothers you. Correcting mistakes in the first case, when the mistake bothers you, does not work.

To correct mistakes you need both authority and love. Authority and love seem to be contradictory but in reality they are not. Authority without love is stifling and does not work. Love without authority is shallow. You need both but they need to be in the right combination so that you can be successful in correcting others’ mistakes. This can happen if you are totally dispassionate and centered.

When you allow room for mistakes, you can be both authoritative and sweet. That is how the Divine is – the right balance of both. Krishna and Jesus had both. People in love also exercise authority with those they love. Authority and love exist in all relationships.

Faith and Alertness

Faith and alertness appear to be completely opposite in nature. When you are alert, usually there is no faith and you feel restless and insecure. When there is faith the mind is secure and rested and you are not alert.

There are three types of faith:

Tamasic faith which is because of dullness. Like when you do not want to take responsibility or action and you say, “Oh it doesn’t matter, anyway God will take care of all these things!” (laughter)

Rajasic faith which is brought on by intense compulsion of desires and ambition. The ambition keeps the faith alive.

Satvic faith is innocent and is born out of fullness of consciousness.

Faith and alertness, though apparently opposite in nature, are actually complementary to each other.

In the absence of faith there can be no growth, and without alertness there can be no correct understanding. Faith can make you complacent. Alertness makes you tense.

If there is no faith, there is fear. And when there is no alertness one cannot perceive or express properly. A combination of both is essential.

In Gyana—state of wisdom, there is alertness without tension and faith without complacency. The purpose of education should be to remove the element of dullness from faith and the element of fear from alertness. This is a unique and rare combination. If you have faith and alertness at the same time, then you will become a true Gyani; The Wise One.

Creativity

Creativity brings a new beginning for “time”.

When you are creative, you break the monotony of time. Everything becomes fresh and alive. Creativity brings along with it a new round of enthusiasm. Both creative and procreative impulses in nature are associated with enthusiasm. When you are enthusiastic you are closer to the creative principle of existence.

Deep silence is the mother of creativity. No creativity can come out of one who is too busy, worried, over-ambitious or lethargic. Balanced activity, rest and yoga can kindle skills and creativity in you.

Stretching the Emptiness

Stretching the Sound is Music
Stretching the Movement is Dance
Stretching the Smile is Laugher
Stretching the Mind is Meditation
Stretching the Life is Celebration
Stretching the Devotee is God
Stretching the Feeling is Ecstasy
Stretching the Emptiness is Bliss

Question: What is emptiness?
Sri Sri: Emptiness is the doorway between the material and spiritual worlds. It is where you come to understand the nature of the spirit, if you do not know emptiness, then you cannot know the joy of the Being. The knack for experiencing the Being causes emptiness. From the emptiness begins the fullness.

On one side of emptiness is misery and on the other side of emptiness is joy.

That is what Buddha said: “The whole world is misery and what is to be achieved is emptiness.”

What enhances your beauty?

When your mind is not complaining, responsible, courageous, confident and hollow & empty you are inexplicably beautiful. A person who cannot correct or act has no right to complain. And when a person can correct or act, he will never complain.

Complaining is a sign of weakness. Complaining is the nature of utter ignorance where one does not know the Self. Complaint takes away the Beauty that is inborn in you. And it shows up more on the one who is on this path.

Worldly mind is a complaining mind; Divine mind is a dancing mind. Just complaining without indicating the solution is irresponsibility. When the solutions are not workable, finding alternative solutions is Courage.

For external beauty, you put on things; for real Beauty, you have to drop all the things. For external beauty you have to have Make-up; for your real Beauty you only have to realise that you are MADE-UP!

Doing v. Happening

Only one who is 100 percent in doing can recognize the happening.

The healthiest way to apply this knowledge is to see the whole past as happening and the present as doing. If you see the past as doing, then ego and regret come along. When you see the present as happening, then laziness and unawareness set in.

If you apply the doing for the future, it brings tension and worry. If you apply the happening for the future, it might bring some confidence and also lethargy.

Let the happening be for the past. Let the doing be for the present. And the future is a mix of both.

The wise will see the doing in happening and the happening in doing simultaneously. Are you confused now?

One who does a lot of work will never say he did a lot. When someone says he did a lot of work, that means he can do more. He has not done enough.

Work does not tire you as much as the doership does.

All the talents you have are for others. If you have good voice, it is for others. If you are a good cook, it is for others. If you write a good book, it is for others. What do you do? You don’t sit and read your own book! If you are a good carpenter, it is for others.

So all of your talents are useful for others. If you are a good surgeon, it is for others. You cannot do your own surgery. This is interesting. If you are school teacher, it is for others. You cannot teach your own children; they don’t listen to you anyway. So all your work and talents are for others.
